Abscess Incision and Drainage

Patient presents with a painful, fluctuant and red lump
Site:
They are systemically well with no rigors or chills

On examination:
The area is red and inflamed and tender to palpation
There appears to be a collection that requires Incision and Draiage

The patient appear systemically well

Impression:  Abscess

Management:

1. The patient verbally consented to an abcess incision and drainage under local anaesthetic
2. Material risks advised:
- Infection
- Pain
- Incomplete drainage
- Bleeding
3. The area was infiltrated with 1% Lignocain 10ml
4. Verticle incision over the abscess - Pus was drained
5. A simple dressing was applied

Return if the following:
- The area of redness and Swelling increases
- If they begin to feel systemically unwell with symptoms such as rigors, fevers, chills
-  back concerned in any way about their condition

 alternatively if they are unable to the present to the practice call an Ambulance or present to the emergency department
